Aoki Takamasa and Masakatsu Takagi (who form Silicom) haven't taken a long time to deliver a follow up to their very promising first CD. Same kind of packaging and music for this "Silicom 2", with once again a precise, poetic and abstract dance of electronic percussions, cutup melodies and little clicks.

If this description could make one draw comparisons between these two musicians and Autechre, one should see Silicom as the most poetic and accessible approach to IDM and experimentation a` la Autechre to date. As the famous british act, these two Japanese artists mix a bit of everything their samplers can come up with and delicate patterns that carry the listener along a rather mesmerizing, but not straightforward path. The sound are soft and calm, but the music is always rhythmic. With the exception of some background noise and tunes, the whole thing is made of short and dynamic samples and beats. Mostly atonal, these elements are arranged together in a rich ensemble that sometimes gets melodic, and is constantly full of sounds and effects. A lot of "air" is left in the tracks, the samples playing with the silence in between, "Silicom 2" being the contrary of an ear-tiring album, yet far away from anything you would call easy listening.

Very well crafted but following the same theme or sounds for the whole CD, "Silicom 2" is an album whose wonder is its accessibility and its catchiness. Abstract and complex, it is still more human and more pleasant that anything I know for Autechre, and takes the click'n'cuts sonorities to a charming edge, where these tones and sounds do not appear the latest avatars of a new trend, but rather as accurate musical instruments. Revolving around a relatively small array of beats and rhythms, but changing often and integrating all kinds of tones, "Silicom 2" exploits more the musical approach of this IDM-ish kind of music than just boast with sterile experiments. Always quite dry, short, percussive but poetic and naive, this is another example of electronic music with a soul (which is obvious on "Sluc" for example), and which beats hands down most of the things I have heard from Warp lately

Wetzt tauchen wir wieder einmal tief ein in die Welt der Elektronik. AOKI TAKAMASAs "SilicomTwo" (Progressive Form) scheint mir nicht leicht versta¨ndlich ohne einen Berg Hintergrundinformation. Da mo¨chte ich doch sofort eine Parallele zu OVAL ziehen, ohnehin ein musikalischer Kooperationspartner des progressiven Japaners. TAKAMASA scheint in vielerlei Hinsicht ein Neuerer und Innovator zu sein.

So scheint er z.B. mit seinem Ansatz absoluter Real Time Performance bei seinen Konzerten der restlichen elektronischen Welt in Software- und Gera¨teeinsatz immer einen deutlichen Schritt voraus zu sein. Zumeist arbeitet er mit dem Visual-Sound-Artist TAKAGI MASAKATSU zusammen, auch unter dem Namen SILICOM, allerdings wohl nur live oder auf DVD dokumentiert. Wenn es sich jedoch nur um Musik dreht, bleibt er alleine. So auch hier und wie so oft kann ich das wirklich Innovative und Besondere seines Ansatzes und seiner Musik nicht unbedingt nachvollziehen. Und wie noch o¨fter denke ich, dass dieser ganze U¨berbau eigentlich nicht wirklich notwendig ist. Mir geht es schliesslich einzig und allein darum, Freude an der Bescha¨ftigung mit Musik zu haben. Wer dazu Analyse und Softwaretechnolgievergleiche braucht, bittescho¨n, mir reicht das Ergebnis. Wenn mir das einen Anhaltspunkt zur Bescha¨ftigung bietet, braucht es keine langen Begru¨ndungen fu¨r eventuelle Besonderheiten mehr.

Und was hat AOKI TAKAMASA mir da zu bieten? Natu¨rlich nicht die Frage, was da wie klappert, fiept und zischt, sondern wie verscha¨rft sich bei ihm Hochgeschwindigkeits-Breakbeat-Klicken mit sich drehenden und windenden Sounds verschra¨nkt und oben drauf noch auf dem Glockenspiel gespielte Kinderlieder sitzen, wie sich das alles noch drei bis vier Mal in sich zu verwinden scheint － wie eine animierte Ho¨llen-Achterbahn mit irrem Todeswirbel in extremer Zeitlupe － und wie dieses Inferno dann am Ende doch wieder sehr entspannt als lockere, transparente Soundfla¨che stehen bleibt. Japo´n no so´lo es ese parai´so de indie-pops coloristas, fashion-victims y yuppies marciales. La escena electro´nica es de una inusitada riqueza, no so´lo los ma´s conocidos, como KEN ISHII , sino otras figuras como Takkyu Ishino, SUSUMU YOKOTA o MERZBOW , lideran sus respectivos campos de accio´n.

Aoki Takamasa es uno de los nuevos valores de la era digital. Nacido en Osaka, su produccio´n musical viene delimitada por el empleo del software y las herramientas informa´ticas. 'Silicom Two' es el nombre de su nuevo trabajo, un trabajo difi´cil, lleno de aristas, inmerso en un proceso visual al que Takamasa da salida con Silicom, proyecto compartido con Masakazu Takagi, artista multimedia encargado de poner ima´genes al sonido de Takamasa. Una propuesta enfocada al esti´mulo del oi´do y la vista que ha visitado pai´ses como Francia, Reino Unido o Turqui´a y que en el plano sonoro esta´ muy vinculado a los avances de las escuderi´a Warp y Rephlex, abstraccio´n sobre ritmos fri´os. De hecho, Aoki Takamasa ha tocado junto a Cylob (Rephlex), Freeform (Warp, Skam), Microstoria, Vainqueur (Chain Reaction) o Daniel Bell, estetas del ADN ma´s personal de la electro´nica. Bases sombri´as, crujidos y efectos computerizados y muchos espacios entre los que perderse. Comparable a alguno de los trabajos de RICHARD DEVINE , 'SILICOM two' nos ofrece una visio´n distinta del Japo´n hiper tecnolo´gico.

Die zweite CD von Aoki Takamasa ist so unheimlich, dass man es gar nicht glaubt. Dort wo die meisten anderen schon froh wa¨ren einen coolen knispernden Groove hinzubekommen der sich so richtig Hightech anho¨rt, da fa¨ngt diese Platte erst an und mogelt einem so deepe und unwahrscheinliche Melodien aus Sounds die eigentlich gar keine Melodien werden ko¨nnen dazu. Und das mit einer Energie die einen mit jedem Track vo¨llig von neuem U¨berrascht. Das ist nicht euer lieblingelegischer Knistersound, sondern richtige Monstertracks an denen die Crew rings um AE noch einiges lernen ko¨nnte. Und fu¨r Freunde der Hightechorgien ist das ganze eh ein Fest. Killer.

Kaum hat man den Namen gelesen, ja buchstabieren ko¨nnen, erwartet uns ein gebu¨rtiger Nachfolger von der Picture-Disk die zusammen mit Monolake aufgenommen wurde. Ganz schrille und schra¨ge Tracks pra¨sentiert uns Aoki auf dieser Progressive Form, welches ganz selten in den verschiedenen Shops anzutreffen ist und darum, wenn man eine in den Ha¨nden ha¨lt, ein dringlicher Vorschlag, sie zu erwerben. Elf Tracks umfasst die gesamte Gera¨uschekulisse, wo man schon beim Stichwort sind. Diese Ausgabe eignet sich bestens zum Einla¨uten oder eben Ausla¨uten des Feierabend und ist in unseren Gegenden sicherlich gut positioniert einsetzbar. Die rote Hu¨lle mit dem ?Two“ als Blickfang, nimmt schon beim Eintritt beim Recorddealer die ganze Aufmerksamkeit auf sich. Besonders hervorzuheben ist der vierte Tune ?Mry.“, der vo¨llig abgedreht und verspielt die Banden nach guten fu¨nf Minuten verla¨sst. AOKI takamasa / SILICOM two (Progressive Form) 2002-03

This is a curious little gem: well-crafted, precise, somewhat abstract, then in other places deals out some quite conventional 4/4 techno. Silicom are a young Kyoto-based duo producing 'a new vision and combination of sound and visuals from a totally new standpoint', apparently. A pretty large claim, and although not entirely justified, seeing as some of it is reminiscent of Autechre's EP 7 circa 1999, it does make an interesting foray into the arcane realms of glitch-based electronica. 'Exp. 2' focuses attention on one drum noise put through various effects, and the sound of it mutating through various stretches and reverbs is quite hypnotic. The same kind of thing happens on 'Exp.' though here the drum is muted to a random shuffle and provides the percussion to a rather sinister bell-like wash in the background. More traditional tracks with drum n bass overtones and sampled children's voices sit well with the more avant-garde experiments on offer. Noises such as mutterings from a malfunctioning computer or a fax machine are crystal clear and understated and add to the overall futuristic sound of what promises to be a name to look out for. EW

Indopepshychics seem to be a group of DJ producers in Japan and working with Robert Henke of Monolake they present their second 12" on the Progressive Form label. The 12" comes on a certain of transparent green vinyl, with the first side being the collaboration and the more upbeat second side being the track by the band themselves. Seesaw blips chirp in Sah? Teasing over a low wisp before accelerating and triggering a thickening of sound. Bass notes work with sweeps, contributing to the laid back pace. Slight sounds rustle, small objects in surface motions. A wind based strip lays itself through the expanding, now vibrating, bass presence. Stripping to pulses and periodic blips. One thing with vinyl is the possibility of surface noise; which coloured vinyl like this can be bad for. With that there are crackling sounds present throughout Sah? Whether this is a deliberate click detail is not initially clear, but given that it is entirely absent on the second side then one must assume it is part of the composition. Trundling beats are interspersed with a steady bass beat, which makes 5_24 immediately more upbeat. Strained bass line wavers, diffused oscillations suggesting a progression. Rising electronic lines form swept harmonics against the persistent, and now a little understated, beat work. Twitching in some techno semblance of its own.

DJ Kensei, AKA Indopepsychics, brings forth the pumping minimalism of "5_24" on the back of a solid linear beat, shifting a squirming Nord Modular over the top, tweaking and tuning the controls until a hazy twirl emerges. After a while, the switchback shimmer becomes quite beatiful in the way only synthetic sounds can be, shivering and trillinga broad-spectrum wash over the trickling clicks which counterpoint the main rhythm.

Made in collaboration with Robert Henke, "Sah?" is altogether less straightforward and undoubtedly less likely to receive a favourable dancefloor welcome.

Kensei's bass and rhythms section are held subordinate to the streaks of electronic shuffling Henke provides, scratching and sweeping in slow motion under the sparsely-constructed weave of sussurating effects units. Glitching on a vinyl and needle riff, hissing with analogue synthesis (digitized or otherwise) and the bleep of a pulse measurement, "Sah?" breathes slowly through a relaxed set of lungs while the heart beats at a regular, controlled page. Yoga music from inside the modular filter. Inhale, slowly... and relax.

Achtung alles Musik, die eine enge Beziehung zu Visual-Kunst hat, deren Bilder ich hier aber nicht bespreche, da ich nix sehen kann von alldem (extra DVD, Website mit dollgroflen Files, etc.) Takamasa Aoki und Takagi Masakazu haben erst vor wenigen Monaten den ersten Teil von ?Silicom“ vero¨ffentlicht, nun ist Teil 2 da und gefa¨llt mir schon um einiges besser oder ich bin einfach nur eher in Stimmung fu¨r das knarzige Sounddesign von AOKI. Ziemlich viel Sto¨rgera¨usche mit Restelementen von Melodien werden hier in einem Rutsch dargeboten, manchmal kommt da etwas Melancholie bei rum, ab und zu wird es aber auch recht anstrengend. Herr Masakatsu macht fu¨r Silicom die Visuals, was ich jetzt gar nicht beurteilen kann, da es da ebenso wie fu¨r sein eigenes Album auf Carpark noch eine DVD gibt. La¨ge die mir vor, ko¨nnte ich es auch nicht beurteilen. Seine Musik geho¨rt aber zum Besten, was es in dieser Ecke gibt. Markus Popp soll sich endlich zuru¨ckziehen und einsehen, dass das was Oval mal erfunden haben, inzwischen wesentlich besser von anderen gemacht wird. Bei ?Opus Pia“ hat Takagi mit Konzentration auf Pianokla¨nge (das u¨berflu¨ssige Fieldrecordingsstu¨ck skippen wir mal ganz einfach weg) die scho¨nsten stotternden und um die Ecke plinkernden Etu¨den gebaut, die ich je geho¨rt habe. Bald kommt von ihm ein Album auf Karaoke Kalk und seinen Erstling auf Carpark brauche ich jetzt dringend auch noch. Musik fu¨r Rechenzentren und John Cage ist bestimmt auch voll neidisch. Auch auf Carpark: die Marumari Remixe. Och ja, ein paar Supibeitra¨ge von Casino vs. Japan, Greg Davis und Robert Lippok, ein paar Schulterzuckprovozierer, die mir zuviel IDM in den dollen Marumarisound bringen, kein Totalausfall. Remixalbum halt. Marumari ist nun zu zweit und schreibt/schreiben gerade einen Science Fiction-Roman. Alles klar? Achja, extra MP3s und 2 Videos gibt es auch noch dazu. Nitrada hatte bisher ein MP3 Release und einen Samplerbeitrag und nun kommt das erste Minialbum auf 2nd. Hiphoppige Beats und weite Soundscapes bringen mich dazu, an Phonem zu denken, ?Sky was blue“ traut sich mit Streichern und Piano etwas Ru¨hrseliges und ich mag es dann so richtig. Etwas mehr Tracks wa¨re scho¨n gewesen, ich weifl noch immer nicht so richtig, ob das nun der Hammer ist oder nur einer von vielen, die diese Beats mit diesen Melodien kombinieren, naja, eher ein Guter allemal. Eher ba¨h! ist die Folge 5 der ?Biphop Generation“, aber eigentlich nur wegen der groflspurigen Spru¨che wie ?Document electronica that is challenging the ears and the mind“. Hysterisches giggeln. Die ersten beiden Tracks von Accelera Deck und Andrew Duke kommen eigentlich ganz angenehm und gut, auch der Rest ist bis auf den letzten Track ganz okay, aber richtig sympathisch wirkt das dann nicht mehr.Einen richtig netten und talentierten Act aus Frankreich (urspru¨nglich aus Franken) hat uns vor ein paar Monaten schon 12k geschenkt. Naono bringt auf ?slope drifting“ wirklich sehr guten klischeefreien Ambient mit viel Gefu¨hl und interessanten Sounds. Rem

AOKI TAKAMASA - SILICOM TWO (CD by Progressive Form)

Having never heard about Aoki Takamasa, it was a great surprise listening to the second full-length-album by the japanese composer under the project Silicom. The Silicom-project is based on a joint venture between Aoki Takamasa and another interesting composer from the Kyoto-area, Masakasu Takagi. Silicom Two first of all takes its starting point in Aoki Takamasa^"s ability to create rhythmic textures that despite the mechanical algebraic pace, still seems nicely vivid and warm. Imagine how it would sound if a computer as a living entity was doing the drums, somebody once described the sound of Aoki Takamasa^"s subtle rhytm textures. Still quite different, Autechre, must be the obvious kindred spirit as regards the chaotic yet perfectly programmed rhythmic patterns. There are also some parallels towards the German electronica-scene concentrated around Mouse On Mars, thanks to Aoki Takamasa^"s sometimes humorous approach to swarmingly pulsating electronica. Masakazu Takagi^"s beautiful, almost visual electronic soundscapes stand as the perfect adaption for the restless rhytm patterns of Aoki Takamasa. In such way the Silicom-collaboration ends up with a highly recommendable album that without any doubt will inspire everyone familiar with the electronica-scene around Autechre and Mouse On Mars. In einer Sushi-Bar werden auf einem Fliessband-artigen, rund um die eigentliche Produktionssta¨tte der Fisch-Reis-Tang-Kombinationen, in kleinen handlichen und damit mundgerecht zurechtgestutzten Happen, auf Tellern, die durch ihr Muster den Preis der Einzelportion definieren, Snacks dargeboten. Aoki Takamasa wurde 1976 in Osaka geboren. Die Technologie, die seinem Sound-Design zugrunde liegt nennt sich "Cutting-Edge". Sushi sind kleine, in Tang eingerollte Reisklumpen mit einem Kern aus rohem Fisch oder Gemu¨se. "Silicom Two" bietet mit einer Laufzeit von 62 Minuten und 58 Sekunden, also fast 63 Minuten lang digitale Happen aus Klangmutationen, Interferenzen und rekonstruktablen Rhythmen. Sushi wird kalt und der Fisch somit roh verspiesen.

Aoki Takamasa / Silicom Two / Progressive Form

Das die Japaner scheinbar ein viel natu¨rlicheres Verha¨ltnis zu elektronischen Gera¨ten pflegen, als es der Durchschnitts- europa¨er kann man beim Ho¨ren vieler Japanischer Ton- tra¨ger mutmassen. Da bildet diese Platte keine Ausnahme. Sie klingt sehr, sehr elektronisch, aber nicht kalt und tot. Eher melancholisch, abstrakt und durchaus auch mal etwas melodio¨ser. Sie macht auf jeden Fall neugierig auf Japan. Die u¨bliche Herangehensweise Takamase Aokis und Masakazu Tagakis besteht darin visuelle und klangliche Elemente miteinander zu verbinden. Leider ist die CD nur der Audioteil dieser Arbeit. Wenn man den visuellen Part sehen will sollte man sich auf ein Konzert der beiden begeben.

Together with visual artist Masakatsu Takagi, Takamasa Aoki has been defining new boundaries in performing art with their Silicom project, based on visual displays and accompanying soundtracks. Expanding from their regular performances in Kyoto and Japan, the duo have taken their show all over the world, including concerts in the US, Germany, France or Turkey. Second volumes in the Silicom series, the new album by Aoki Takamasa compiles more of the music created for the live shows. The highly technological settings shaped by Takamasa are minimalist in essence. Very much like with his first album, Takamasa weaves delicate artificial sounds into intricate organic structures, creating lightly balanced soundscapes, supported by complex beats. Very much like on recordings by Autechre or Monolake, and regardless of the diversity of genres, the extreme abstraction of the compositions doesn`t get in the way of their inherent beauty, as the focus is very much on the actual ambience of the piece more than on its technological inputs. By developing atmospheric idioms, Takamasa constantly regenerates his basic expressive outlines, avoiding distancing himself from his audience, or his purpose. Silicom 2 dwells in more deconstructed shapes than its predecessor. If Mry, Sluc or Worb recall the linear low key techno of Chain Reaction artists, the rest of the album appears slightly more extreme and convoluted, highlighting the evolution of the Silicom project, and the very close link existing between the visual and auditory elements of the work. Silicom 2 is however very much a stand-alone production and doesn`t require Takagi’s creations to work perfectly. The environmental perception of the musical component of the work, although acting as support during live performances, is developed exactly to operate independently. Silicom 2 expands further the sonic experimentations started by Aoki on the first album in the series. The music has gained in organic impulses as it approaches maturity. If proper melodic structures are relatively rare here, Takamasa Aoki compensates by initiating some incredibly dense soundscapes, leaving the listener with a curious impression that machines have finally dominated men to produce strangely emotional pieces of music.
