A few days ago when i went to Tokyo, I stayed at Mr.Yoshihiro Hanno's place. I owe him many obligations both officially and privately. He's one of the most respectable artist for me today.
I always feel that his music has a lot of musical beauty, well thought out structual development, highly sophisticated composition and so many surprise in his works. And I always feel that i should give up making music.. Today in Japan, most of the music is composed as "product" to sell, but even though his works are always musically and artistically beautiful. I think we're lucky that we're living in the same era with him.
At that night, a movie director Mr.Yusuke Kaida came to Mr.Hanno's place too, then we talked a lot until six o'clock in the morning. Mainly we talked about movies but i learned a lot from them. That was fun! Anyway I knew it but Japan is really crazy country....

this is a very old blog now, but I have been reading alot of your old entries lately, just out of interest.
I find it quite funny when you mention Yoshihiro Hanno in your blog. It is very clear you respect him and his works alot and look up to him as an artist. You have said a few times that you feel your music isn't good enough and that you question your works when you meet Yoshihiro Hanno or see his LIVE. It's funny because it is like what I feel with your music or when I see your LIVE videos.
When I make music I always compare it to the works of people like you and RADIQ and ofcourse this is very hard because you are both such amazing artists.
I have only been using computers and software since summer 2005 and hardware synthesizers for about 1 year, so I am still very unexperienced.
I was wondering...
You said that you had been using computers to make music for about 3 years before you got signed to PROGRESSIVE FOrM. Were you unexperienced at using software to make music before that and did you have to learn about computers and software yourself or did you get taught about it, maybe in university or something?
It's hard for me just now to afford software like you use, so I was wondering what your first computer programme(s) were?
Also, I am very interested in max/MSP, but I don't understand how to use this properly yet, nor can I afford it :(
When did you start using max/MSP (what year/ album)and did you learn about it yourself, and was it difficult at first for you?
I am just curious and it would give me some comfort to know how it was for you when you started, especially knowing how great your works are ;-)
thanks alot.

thanks for your comment.
> Were you unexperienced at using software to make

I learned about computers and software myself and I've never used
any computer before then. It was too expensive to buy.
and I didn't go to any schools to learn about it.
I tried to find the info that i wanted to know on the web(at that time, there was almost no information
in Japanese, so i always carrying English dictionary with me, but most of the important words were not on it..), and also some of my
friends helped me a lot.
>I was wondering what your first computer programme(s) were?
It was Cubase. The shopkeeper told me that he could give me
some discount if i buy mac and cubase together.
I'm not using it now though.
>When did you start using max/MSP (what year/ album)and

I don't really remember, but i think i started using it around '98 or '99.. I don't know.
First of all i learned it myself and by little and little i had some
friends who knows about it very much on line and we shared
information each other.
also i found some webs which i got a lot of information about it.
I'm sure that you can find many web about MAX/msp and you're
lucky, most of them are written in English. I envy you ;-)
thanks AOKI :-)
it's funny you say that because the shop where i got my laptop gave me a discount when i bought Cubase + laptop together :-)
I am still learning with Cubase just now though.
Yes, I have found some really helpful websites that will help me learn about max/MSP :-)
I don't know anyone else that uses max/MSP but I am fortunate to have the information on the internet in my own language!
I guess I have an advantage unlike when you started, this gives me alot of hope :-)
thank you again, it gives me great comfort to know you were in the same position as i am in now when learning about computer music (although it must have been harder for you to translate some things, i am lucky not to have this problem)and if i can go on to make works as great as yours I will be very happy ;-)
best,
Murray Turner, Scotland.
Murray, I use Cubase now as well and I am also using it with Reason. I think Reason is great for MIDI and Cubase probably more for wave files. I have also tried Max/MSP and I think it's a bit complicated to use.
Aoki-san, what softwares are you using now to make your music?
Posted by: shu at January 19, 2006 10:03 AMhi shu, yes it seems alot of people start out using Cubase (and keep using it) I like it for the moment, but I'm planning on switching to another programme when I am ready to do LIVE, something that I can continue using for both LIVE and studio use instead of using multiple programmes.
Yeah, max/MSP is very complicated I think. It's not an easy thing to learn but it is something that I am going to take alot of time on. Hopefully I will learn little by little.
oh, I read this interview here http://teamabunai.org/interviews/aokitakamasa.php
AOKI speaks about his current softwares (and hardwares)
I'm not sure how old this interview is now though.
best,
Murray.
>>shu and Murray.
thanks for your comment.
>Aoki-san, what softwares are you using now to make your music?
I'm using a lot of softwares and hardwares if they can produce
my favorite sound.
The most important thing to use MAX/MSP is to have your certain ideas.
I think you need to know what you really want to do with it.
When i started using MAX, I decided to use it because i couldn't
realize my ideas without it. that's why I chose MAX.
But in this past few years, softaware and hardware technologies
are rapidly developed, and so many ideas can be realized without this software.
I really think it's really good to know how to use it, but What i think the most important thing is the result, in this case sound and song.
I've been using MAX even now, that's because i can't realize my idea without it.
thank again.
